Introduction. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Effectiveness recommends both low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and Rivaroxaban for venous thromboembolic (VTE) prophylaxis following lower limb arthroplasty. Despite evidence in the literature that suggests Rivaroxaban reduces VTE events, there are emerging concerns from the orthopaedic community regarding an increase in wound complications following its use. Methods. Through the orthopaedic clinical directors forum, Trusts replacing LMWH with Rivaroxaban for lower limb arthroplasty thromboprophylaxis during 2009 were identified. Prospectively collected Hospital episode statistics (HES) data was then analysed for these units so as to determine rates of 90-day symptomatic deep venous thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE), major bleed (cerebrovascular accident or gastrointestinal haemorrhage), all-cause mortality, and 30-day wound infection and readmission rates before and after the change to Rivaroxaban. 2752 patients prescribed Rivaroxaban following TKR or THR were compared to 10358 patients prescribed LMWH. Data was analysed using odds ratios (OR). Results. There were significantly more wound infections in the Rivaroxaban group (3.85% vs. 2.81%, OR=0.72; 95% CI 0.58-0.90). There were no significant differences between the two groups for PTE (OR=1.52; 0.77-2.97), major bleed (OR=0.73; 0.48-1.12), all-cause mortality (OR=0.93; 0.46-1.87) and re-admission rate (OR=1.21; 0.88-1.67). There were significantly fewer symptomatic DVTs in the Rivaroxaban group (0.91% vs. 0.36%, OR=2.51; 1.30-4.82). Conclusion. This study is the first to describe the real impact of the use of Rivaroxaban in the NHS. When compared with LMWH in lower limb arthroplasty patients, wound infection rates were significantly higher following Rivaroxaban use whilst providing no reduction in symptomatic PTE or all-cause mortality

Aims. As has been shown in larger animal models, knee immobilization can lead to arthrofibrotic phenotypes. Our study included 168 C57BL/6J female mice, with 24 serving as controls, and 144 undergoing a knee procedure to induce a contracture without osteoarthritis (OA). Methods. Experimental knees were immobilized for either four weeks (72 mice) or eight weeks (72 mice), followed by a remobilization period of zero weeks (24 mice), two weeks (24 mice), or four weeks (24 mice) after suture removal. Half of the experimental knees also received an intra-articular injury. Biomechanical data were collected to measure passive extension angle (PEA). Histological data measuring area and thickness of posterior and anterior knee capsules were collected from knee sections. Results. Experimental knees immobilized for four weeks demonstrated mean PEAs of 141°, 72°, and 79° after zero, two, and four weeks of remobilization (n = 6 per group), respectively. Experimental knees demonstrated reduced PEAs after two weeks (p < 0.001) and four weeks (p < 0.0001) of remobilization compared to controls. Following eight weeks of immobilization, experimental knees exhibited mean PEAs of 82°, 73°, and 72° after zero, two, and four weeks of remobilization, respectively. Histological analysis demonstrated no cartilage degeneration. Similar trends in biomechanical and histological properties were observed when intra-articular violation was introduced. Conclusion. This study established a novel mouse model of robust knee contracture without evidence of OA. This was appreciated consistently after eight weeks of immobilization and was irrespective of length of remobilization. As such, this arthrofibrotic model provides opportunities to investigate molecular pathways and therapeutic strategies. Cite this article: Bone Joint Res 2023;12(1):58–71

Aims. We propose a state-of-the-art temporary spacer, consisting of a cobalt-chrome (CoCr) femoral component and a gentamicin-eluting ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) tibial insert, which can provide therapeutic delivery of gentamicin, while retaining excellent mechanical properties. The proposed implant is designed to replace conventional spacers made from bone cement. Methods. Gentamicin-loaded UHMWPE was prepared using phase-separated compression moulding, and its drug elution kinetics, antibacterial, mechanical, and wear properties were compared with those of conventional gentamicin-loaded bone cement. Results. Gentamicin-loaded UHMWPE tibial components not only eradicated planktonic Staphylococcus aureus, but also prevented colonization of both femoral and tibial components. The proposed spacer possesses far superior mechanical and wear properties when compared with conventional bone cement spacers. Conclusion. The proposed gentamicin-eluting UHMWPE spacer can provide antibacterial efficacy comparable with currently used bone cement spacers, while overcoming their drawbacks. The novel spacer proposed here has the potential to drastically reduce complications associated with currently used bone cement spacers and substantially improve patients’ quality of life during the treatment. Aims. The aim of this study was to screen the entire genome for genetic markers associated with risk for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury. Methods. Genome-wide association (GWA) analyses were performed using data from the Kaiser Permanente Research Board (KPRB) and the UK Biobank. ACL and PCL injury cases were identified based on electronic health records from KPRB and the UK Biobank. GWA analyses from both cohorts were tested for ACL and PCL injury using a logistic regression model adjusting for sex, height, weight, age at enrolment, and race/ethnicity using allele counts for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The data from the two GWA studies were combined in a meta-analysis. Candidate genes previously reported to show an association with ACL injury in athletes were also tested for association from the meta-analysis data from the KPRB and the UK Biobank GWA studies. Results. There was a total of 2,214 cases of ACL and PCL injury and 519,869 controls within the two cohorts, with three loci demonstrating a genome-wide significant association in the meta-analysis: INHBA, AEBP2, and LOC101927869. Of the eight candidate genes previously studied in the literature, six were present in the current dataset, and only COL3A1 (rs1800255) showed a significant association (p = 0.006). Conclusion. Genetic markers in three novel loci in this study and one previously-studied candidate gene were identified as potential risk factors for ACL and PCL injury and deserve further validation and investigation of molecular mechanisms. Aims

This study aimed to explore the biological and clinical importance of dysregulated key genes in osteoarthritis (OA) patients at the cartilage level to find potential biomarkers and targets for diagnosing and treating OA.

Methods

Six sets of gene expression profiles were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. Differential expression analysis, weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA), and multiple machine-learning algorithms were used to screen crucial genes in osteoarthritic cartilage, and genome enrichment and functional annotation analyses were used to decipher the related categories of gene function. Single-sample gene set enrichment analysis was performed to analyze immune cell infiltration. Correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship among the hub genes and immune cells, as well as markers related to articular cartilage degradation and bone mineralization.

Aims

Adenosine, lidocaine, and Mg2+ (ALM) therapy exerts differential immuno-inflammatory responses in males and females early after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Our aim was to investigate sex-specific effects of ALM therapy on joint tissue repair and recovery 28 days after surgery.

Methods

Male (n = 21) and female (n = 21) adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into ALM or Saline control treatment groups. Three days after ACL rupture, animals underwent ACLR. An ALM or saline intravenous infusion was commenced prior to skin incision, and continued for one hour. An intra-articular bolus of ALM or saline was also administered prior to skin closure. Animals were monitored to 28 days, and joint function, pain, inflammatory markers, histopathology, and tissue repair markers were assessed.

Aims

To explore the efficacy of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of osteochondral defect (OCD), and its effects on the levels of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2, -3, -4, -5, and -7 in terms of cartilage and bone regeneration.

Methods

The OCD lesion was created on the trochlear groove of left articular cartilage of femur per rat (40 rats in total). The experimental groups were Sham, OCD, and ESWT (0.25 mJ/mm2, 800 impulses, 4 Hz). The animals were euthanized at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks post-treatment, and histopathological analysis, micro-CT scanning, and immunohistochemical staining were performed for the specimens.


Aims

The aim of this study was to compare the migration of the femoral component, five years postoperatively, between patients with a highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) insert and those with a conventional polyethylene (PE) insert in an uncemented Triathlon fixed insert cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Secondary aims included clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). We have previously reported the migration and outcome of the tibial components in these patients.

Methods

A double-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted including 96 TKAs. The migration of the femoral component was measured with radiostereometry (RSA) at three and six months and one, two, and five years postoperatively. PROMs were collected preoperatively and at all periods of follow-up.

Aims

Implantation of ultra-purified alginate (UPAL) gel is safe and effective in animal osteochondral defect models. This study aimed to examine the applicability of UPAL gel implantation to acellular therapy in humans with cartilage injury.

Methods

A total of 12 patients (12 knees) with symptomatic, post-traumatic, full-thickness cartilage lesions (1.0 to 4.0 cm2) were included in this study. UPAL gel was implanted into chondral defects after performing bone marrow stimulation technique, and assessed for up to three years postoperatively. The primary outcomes were the feasibility and safety of the procedure. The secondary outcomes were self-assessed clinical scores, arthroscopic scores, tissue biopsies, and MRI-based estimations.

Aims

The purpose of this study was to assess mid-term survivorship following primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with Optetrak Logic components and identify the most common revision indications at a single institution.

Methods

We identified a retrospective cohort of 7,941 Optetrak primary TKAs performed from January 2010 to December 2018. We reviewed the intraoperative findings of 369 TKAs that required revision TKA from January 2010 to December 2021 and the details of the revision implants used. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to determine survivorship. Cox regression analysis was used to examine the impact of patient variables and year of implantation on survival time.

Aims

Metal particles detached from metal-on-metal hip prostheses (MoM-THA) have been shown to cause inflammation and destruction of tissues. To further explore this, we investigated the histopathology (aseptic lymphocyte-dominated vasculitis-associated lesions (ALVAL) score) and metal concentrations of the periprosthetic tissues obtained from patients who underwent revision knee arthroplasty. We also aimed to investigate whether accumulated metal debris was associated with ALVAL-type reactions in the synovium.

Methods

Periprosthetic metal concentrations in the synovia and histopathological samples were analyzed from 230 patients from our institution from October 2016 to December 2019. An ordinal regression model was calculated to investigate the effect of the accumulated metals on the histopathological reaction of the synovia.

Aims

This study compared patient-reported outcomes of three total knee arthroplasty (TKA) designs from one manufacturer: one cruciate-retaining (CR) design, and two cruciate-sacrificing designs, anterior-stabilized (AS) and posterior-stabilized (PS).

Methods

Patients scheduled for primary TKA were included in a single-centre, prospective, three-armed, blinded randomized trial (n = 216; 72 per group). After intraoperative confirmation of posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) integrity, patients were randomly allocated to receive a CR, AS, or PS design from the same TKA system. Insertion of an AS or PS design required PCL resection. The primary outcome was the mean score of all five subscales of the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) at two-year follow-up. Secondary outcomes included all KOOS subscales, Oxford Knee Score, EuroQol five-dimension health questionnaire, EuroQol visual analogue scale, range of motion (ROM), and willingness to undergo the operation again. Patient satisfaction was also assessed.

Aims

Micromotion of the polyethylene (PE) inlay may contribute to backside PE wear in addition to articulate wear of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Using radiostereometric analysis (RSA) with tantalum beads in the PE inlay, we evaluated PE micromotion and its relationship to PE wear.

Methods

A total of 23 patients with a mean age of 83 years (77 to 91), were available from a RSA study on cemented TKA with Maxim tibial components (Zimmer Biomet). PE inlay migration, PE wear, tibial component migration, and the anatomical knee axis were evaluated on weightbearing stereoradiographs. PE inlay wear was measured as the deepest penetration of the femoral component into the PE inlay.

Aims

A functional anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) has been assumed to be required for patients undergoing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). However, this assumption has not been thoroughly tested. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the biomechanical effects exerted by cruciate ligament-deficient knees with medial UKAs regarding different posterior tibial slopes.

Methods

ACL- or PCL-deficient models with posterior tibial slopes of 1°, 3°, 5°, 7°, and 9° were developed and compared to intact models. The kinematics and contact stresses on the tibiofemoral joint were evaluated under gait cycle loading conditions.

Introduction. Studies of retrieved total knee replacement (TKR) components demonstrate that in vivo wear on the articular surface of polyethylene liners exhibits a much higher variability than their in vitro counterparts tested on simulators. 1. Only one study has attempted to validate a patient-specific model of wear with a clinically retrieved component. 2. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between observed TKR contact conditions during gait and measured volume loss on retrieved tibial components. Methods. Eleven retrieved ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) cruciate-retaining tibial liner components from ten separate patients (implantation time = 8.6±5.6 years) had matching gait trials of normal level walking for each knee. Volume loss on retrieved components was calculated using a coordinate measuring machine and autonomous reconstruction. 3. Motion analysis of normal level walking gait had been conducted between 1986 and 2005 for various previous studies and stored in a consented Human Mechanics Repository, ranging from pre-operative to long-term post-operative testing. Contact location between the femoral component and the tibial component on the medial and lateral plateaus were calculated throughout stance. 4. A previously validated and fine-tuned parametric numerical model was used to calculate TKR contact forces for each gait trial. 5. Vertical contact forces and contact paths on the medial and lateral plateaus were input as normal force and sliding distance to a simplified Archard equation for wear with material wear constant = 2.42 × 10. −7. mm. 3. /Nm. 2,6. to compute average wear per gait cycle. Wear rates were calculated using linear regression, and Pearson correlation examined correlations between modeled and measured wear. Results. Secondary motions at the knee from gait testing showed distinct grouping between trials of each patient (Fig. 1). Three components demonstrated severe polyethylene delamination and were excluded from wear rate analyses. All calculated wear rates for measured and modeled volume loss, shown in Fig. 2, showed excellent agreement and were not significantly different (Table 1). Measured wear rates were comparable to a previous study of a large population of retrieved Miller-Galante II components. 7. As seen in Fig 2b, medial wear volumes for six of eight mild wearing components were closely tracked by their modeled counterparts. Volumes were significantly correlated between measured and modeled wear for the total part and on the medial side, but not for the lateral side (Table 1). Conclusion. Because the Archard equation produces wear volumes that are linearly related to time in situ, deviations from linear predictions arise from patient-specific variations in contact forces and tibiofemoral pathways during normal walking gait. As suggested by the results of the current study, these variations in gait between patients result in meaningful differences to the wear of the UHMWPE component. Despite many assumptions, this study demonstrates the feasibility of a patient-specific model of wear using a rare population of gait-matched retrievals. Aims

Outcomes of current operative treatments for arthrofibrosis after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are not consistently positive or predictable. Pharmacological in vivo studies have focused mostly on prevention of arthrofibrosis. This study used a rabbit model to evaluate intra-articular (IA) effects of celecoxib in treating contracted knees alone, or in combination with capsular release.

Methods

A total of 24 rabbits underwent contracture-forming surgery with knee immobilization followed by remobilization surgery at eight weeks. At remobilization, one cohort underwent capsular release (n = 12), while the other cohort did not (n = 12). Both groups were divided into two subcohorts (n = 6 each) – one receiving IA injections of celecoxib, and the other receiving injections of vehicle solution (injections every day for two weeks after remobilization). Passive extension angle (PEA) was assessed in live rabbits at 10, 16, and 24 weeks, and disarticulated limbs were analyzed for capsular stiffness at 24 weeks.

Infection remains as one of the major challenges of total joint surgery. One-stage irrigation, debridement and reimplantation or two-stage revision surgery with a temporary implantation of antibiotic eluting bone cement spacer followed by reimplantation are two methods often used to treat infected patients with mixed outcomes. Like bone cement, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) can also be used as a carrier for antibiotics. Recently, we demonstrated that vancomycin and rifampin can be successfully delivered from UHMWPE implants at therapeutic levels to eradicate Staphylococcus aureus biofilm in a lupine animal model. There are regulatory challenges in translating these types of combination devices in to clinical use. One approach is to follow a stepwise strategy, with the first step of seeking clearance for a temporary UHMWPE spacer containing gentamicin sulfate. In this study, we explored the effect of gentamicin sulfate (GS) content in UHMWPE on GS elution rate and antimicrobial activity against methicillin-sensitive S. aureus(MSSA). We also assessed the effect of spacer fabrication on the activity of gentamicin sulfate. We prepared and consolidated UHMWPE/GS blends in varying concentrations. After consolidation, we fabricated test samples with surface area (350mm2) to volume (300mm3) ratio of 1.2 for elution in 1.5ml phosphate buffered saline at body temperature for up to six months and quantified eluted GS content using liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (LCMS). We assessed the antibacterial activity of the obtained samples in vitro against various concentrations of MSSA (103–106 CFU/ml). Furthermore, we quantified the probability of bacterial colonization of UHMWPE impregnated with GS compared to GS containing bone cement. We assessed any detectable changes in activity of eluted GS caused by spacer fabrication by screening m/z peaks of GS isomers in mass spectra obtained from LC-MS. Gentamicin sulfate activity was not compromised by the elevated temperature and pressure used during spacer fabrication. Elution rate of GS increased with increasing GS content in the blends studied. At comparable elution rates, the GS-loaded UHMWPE was either equivalent or better in terms of antibacterial and anticolonization properties when compared with gentamicin containing bone cement. GS-impregnated UHMWPE is a promising material for temporary spacers

Purpose. This study investigates the effect of early tourniquet release on range of flexion following total knee replacement, and the influence of anticoagulation with Rivaroxaban and Clexane (Enoxaparin). Method. 78 patients were included in the study, who underwent unilateral primary total knee replacement (TKR) in our department under the care of two specialist knee surgeons over a 12 month period. 27 patients underwent TKR with early release of the tourniquet and haemostasis, prior to closure of quadriceps layer: 22 were anticoagulated with Rivaroxaban (GROUP ER), 15 with the low molecular weight heparin Clexane (GROUP EC). Over the same time period, 41 patients TKR with late release of the tourniquet, following closure and bandaging: 13 were anticoagulated with Rivaroxaban (GROUP LR), 28 with Clexane (GROUP LC). A standardised operative technique was employed, and all patients received an AGC (Biomet) PCL-retaining prostheses. Outcome was assessed with range of flexion at 12 weeks postoperatively. Results. The mean range of flexion at 12 weeks was 106.8° in Group ER, 96.54° in Group LR, 108.33° in Group EC and 101.11° in LC. The mean difference in flexion at 12 weeks between Group EC and LC was 7.2°, and between ER and LR was 10.2°. Conclusion. Our study supports the theory that early tourniquet release and haemostasis has a beneficial effect on the early range of flexion following TKR. This affect appears to be increased when the oral anticoagulant Rivaroxaban is used, when compared with low molecular weight heparin

We describe a cohort of patients with a high rate of mid-term failure following Kinemax Plus total knee replacement inserted between 1998 and 2001. This implant has been recorded as having a survival rate of 96% at ten years. However, in our series the survival rate was 75% at nine years. This was also significantly lower than that of subsequent consecutive series of PFC Sigma knee replacements performed by the same surgeon. No differences were found in the clinical and radiological parameters between the two groups. At revision the most striking finding was polyethylene wear. An independent analysis of the polyethylene components was therefore undertaken. Scanning electron microscopy revealed type 2 fusion defects in the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), which indicated incomplete boundary fusion. Other abnormalities consistent with weak UHMWPE particle interface strength were present in both the explanted inserts and in unused inserts from the same period. We consider that these type 2 fusion defects are the cause of the early failure of the Kinemax implants. This may represent a manufacturing defect resulting in a form of programmed polyethylene failure

One-stage irrigation, debridement and reimplantation, or two-stage revision surgery with a temporary implantation of antibiotic eluting bone cement spacer followed by reimplantation are two methods often used to treat infected patients with mixed outcomes. Like bone cement, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) can also be used as a carrier for antibiotics. Recently, we demonstrated that vancomycin and rifampin can be delivered from UHMWPE implants at therapeutic levels to eradicate Staphylococcus aureus biofilm in a lupine animal model. There are regulatory challenges in translating these types of combination devices to clinical use. Last year, at this meeting, we presented the preliminary pre-clinical testing for a temporary UHMWPE spacer containing gentamicin sulfate as a first step towards clinical use. Since then, we carried out a survey among the Knee Society membership about their preference for spacer use in two-stage revision surgery and found that 43% prefer to use a CoCr femoral component on an all-poly cemented tibial insert, 22% prefer bone cement spacers molded in the OR, 20% prefer static bone cement spacers, and 14% prefer pre-formed bone cement spacers. We modified our implant design based on the majority's preference for a total knee system, rather than bone cement spacers, in the temporary two-stage approach. In this study, we explored the effect of gentamicin sulfate (GS) elution from UHMWPE/GS tibial inserts on bacterial colonization on CoCr surfaces. Methods. We characterized the gentamicin sulfate (GS) particles with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We molded UHMWPE/GS powder blends and characterized the morphology using SEM and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS). We submerged samples of molded UHMWPE/GS in buffered phosphate solution (PBS) at 37°C and quantified the extent of GS elution into PBS with a method described by Gubernator et al. using o-phthaladehyde (OPA) [1]. Under basic conditions, OPA reacts with primary amino groups to form fluorescent complexes. Since gentamicin is the only source of such amino acids in our elution samples, the number of fluorescent complexes formed is directly proportional to the amount of gentamicin in the sample. Using this method, we could quantify gentamicin elution by measuring sample fluorescence post OPA-reaction. We used a plate reader to excite the fluorescent complexes formed in the OPA reaction and measured the resulting emission at wavelengths of 340 nm and 455 nm, respectively. We also quantified the effect of the standard cleaning protocol (heated sonication in alkaline water and alcohol) used to clean UHMWPE implants on subsequent GS elution from UHMWPE/GS samples using the OPA method. We used agar diffusion tests to characterize antibacterial properties of UHMWPE/GS samples after cleaning. For these tests, we collected eluents collected from UHMWPE/GS and gentamicin-impregnated bone cement (BC/GS) following 1, 2, 3, and 4 weeks of elution, and tested against S. aureus (ATCC 12600). We used the “daughter cells” method developed by Bechert et al. to assess anticolonizing properties of UHMWPE/GS [2,3]. We also characterized the colonization of bacteria on CoCr surfaces in the presence of GS eluting from UHMWPE/GS test samples. For this we modified a Pin-on-Disc (PoD) wear tester: An UHMWPE/GS pin and UHMWPE pin (control) articulated against an implant-finish CoCr disc with Tryptic Soy Broth containing S. Aureus as the lubricant. After 18 hrs, we rinsed the articular surfaces of the pin and disc and stamped them onto Agar gel to transfer any adherent bacteria. We incubated the Agar plate overnight such that adherent bacteria proliferated and became visible. Results. SEM characterized the GS particles as hollow spheres (Fig 1a). These formed small groups of agglomerated domains at the virgin resin boundaries of UHMWPE after molding (Fig 1b). Sulfur signature from the EDS analysis identified the agglomerated domains as GS particles (Fig 2). Elution of GS started with an initial burst and was followed by steady elution up to 12 weeks (Fig 3). Cleaning reduced the initial burst GS elution; and the elution remained unchanged after 2 days (Fig 4). The agar diffusion test showed simmilar inhibition zones for the eluents collected from UHMWPE/GS and BC/GS, suggesting that these samples yield similar antibacterial activity against S. aureus (Fig 5). UHMWPE/GS demonstrated pronounced anticolonizing properties, effectively mitigating the proliferation of S. aureus “daughter” cells. Anticolonizing activity of Palacos R+G was not significantly different when compared with UHMWPE/GS. The PoD test showed little-to-no colonization of CoCr surfaces in the presence of UHMWPE/GS pins, indicative of excellent antibacterial properties of UHMWPE/GS against S. aureus. Conclusion. SEM and EDS has allowed us to visualize domains of gentamicin sulfate particles in UHMWPE. Our OPA method has greater precision than traditional agar-well diffusion methods of measuring gentamicin concentration and showed that gentamicin sulfate-loaded UHMWPE elutes at the same rate as Palacos R+G. Pin-on-disc experiments and the daughter cell method both confirmed that these two materials have similar anticolonization abilities. We also found that using the standard cleaning protocol for UHMWPE orthopedic implants decreased the burst of gentamicin eluting from UHMWPE, but after 2 days, it had no effect compared to uncleaned UHMWPE/GS. Finally, we found that UHMWPE/GS can reduce the colonization of bacteria on CoCr. UHMWPE/GS continues to be a promising material for treating PJI.
