As there is currently no evidenced-based and systematic way of prioritising people requiring JRS we aimed to develop a clinically relevant system to improve prioritisation of people who may require JRS. An important challenge in this area is to accurately assign a queue position and improve list management. To identify priority criteria areas eight workshops were held with surgeons and patients. Domains derived were pain, activity limitations, psychosocial wellbeing, economic impact and deterioration. Draft questions were developed and refined through structured interviews with patients and consultation with consultants. 38 items survived critical appraisal and were mailed to 600 patients. Eleven items survived clinimetric and statistical item reduction. Validation then included co-administration with standardised questionnaires (960 patients), verification of patient MAPT scores through clinical interview, examination of concordance with surgeon global ratings and test-retest. Despite total knee arthroplasty demonstrating high levels of success, 20% of patients report dissatisfaction with their result. Wellness Stasis Socks are embedded with a proprietary pattern of neuro-receptor activation points that have been proven to activate a precise neuro-response, as according to the pattern theory of haptic perception, which stimulates improvements in pain and function. Technologies that manipulate this sensory environment, such as textured insoles, have proven to be effective in improving gait patterns in patients with knee osteoarthritis. In regard to patients undergoing TKA using this new technology may prove beneficial as an adjunct to recovery as many patients suffer from further deficits to their proprioceptive system caused by ligamentous damage and alterations to mechanoreceptors during procedure. Introduction. The first VRAS TKA was performed in New Zealand in November 2020 using a Patient Specific Balanced Technique whereby VRAS enables very accurate collection of the bony anatomy and soft tissue envelope of the knee to plan and execute the optimal positioning for a balanced TKA. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and one of the ten most disabling diseases in developed countries. Total joint replacement (TJR) is considered by far as the most effective treatment for end-stage OA patients. The majority of patients achieve symptomatic improvement following TJR. However, about 22% of the TJR patients either do not improve or deteriorate after surgery. Several potential non-genetic predictors for the TJR outcome have been investigated. There has been growing interest in the literature regarding evaluation of functional outcomes in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) while suffering from depression and using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Previous literature has shown that these patients have lower post-operative functional scores compared to those without SSRI use and with multiple musculoskeletal co-morbidities. This might be the result of potentially suboptimal motivation and participation in the post-operative rehabilitation programs. One recent study from a single center has suggested a reduction in adverse events in patients undergoing arthroplasty while on SSRI. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the post operative functional scores of patients on SSRI and compare them with the patients not prescribed SSRIs. A retrospective data analysis was performed on patients who had primary TKA and primary THA between 1st June 2014 and 31st May 2017. The patients into two groups. In the first, patients received SSRI for at least one year before the surgery while in group two, patients did not receive SSRI. Outcome measures included Western Ontario and McMaster university osteoarthritis index (WOMAC) and EQ5D5L scores at pre surgery, three months and 12 months post surgery. Chi-square and t test was used to compare categorical variables and continuous variables respectively. Multivariate linear regression was conducted to compare the change of scores between the two groups and was adjusted for age, gender, and comorbidities. The purpose of this study was to report all complications during the first consecutive 865 cases of bikini incision direct anterior approach (DAA) total hip arthroplasty (THA) performed by a single surgeon. The secondary aims of the study are to report our clinical outcomes and implant survivorship. We discuss our surgical technique to minimize complication rates during the procedure. We undertook a retrospective analysis of our complications, clinical outcomes and implant survivorship of 865 DAA THA's over a period of 6 years (mean = 5.1yrs from 2.9 to 9.4 years). The complication rates identified in this study were low. Medium term survival at minimum 2-year survival and revision as the end point, was 99.53% and 99.84% for the stem and acetabular components respectively.

Our primary objective was to determine if preoperative opioid use among patient awaiting total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was associated with worse patient-reported outcomes (PRO) measures at one-year follow-up when compared to non-opioid users, after adjusting for age, gender, and comorbidities. The study linked Alberta's Pharmacy Information Network (PIN) data with prospectively collected Alberta Bone and Joint Health Repository administrative data (medical and PRO data) for patients who underwent primary TKA in Alberta from 2013–2015. The PIN contains prescribing information from physician offices and pharmacies across Alberta. Preoperative ‘opioid users’ were defined as having 90-days of consistent opioid use in the 180-days prior TKA, and ‘opioid-exposed’ subjects had recorded opioid prescriptions in the 180-days prior to TKA, but did not meet the definition of an opioid user. Those with no opioid-exposure in the 180-days pre-TKA were deemed a ‘non-opioid user’. Ten to twenty percent of patients are dissatisfied with the clinical result after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Aim of this study was to investigate the impact of personality traits on patient satisfaction and subjective outcome of TKA. We investigated 80 patients with 86 computer navigated TKAs (Emotion®, B Braun Aesculap) and asked for patient satisfaction. We divided patients into two groups (satisfied or dissatisfied). 12 personality traits were tested by an independent psychologist, using the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI-R). Postoperative examination included Knee Society Score (KSS), Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The use of rotating hinge (RH) prostheses for severe primary as well as revision arthroplasty is widely established. Aim of this study was to investigate long term results of a new RH prosthesis (EnduRo®, B Braun, Germany), which uses carbon-fiber reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone (CFR PEEK) as a new bearing material, first time used in knee arthroplasty. Fifty-six consecutive patients, who received the EnduRo® RH prosthesis were included in this prospective study: 21 patients (37.5%) received the prosthesis as a primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and 35 patients (62.5%) underwent revision total knee arthroplasties (rTKA). Our objective was to examine revision rates and patient reported outcome scores (PROMS) for cemented and uncemented primary total knee joint replacement (TKJR) at six months, one year and five years post-operatively. Patients and Methods: This matched cohort study involved secondary analyses of data collected as part of a large prospective observational study monitoring outcomes following knee replacement in Christchurch, New Zealand. Cemented and uncemented TKJR participants (n = 1526) were matched on age (± 5 years), sex and body mass index (BMI). From this larger sample, PROMS data, Oxford Knee Score and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), out to five years post-operatively were analysed for a matched subset of participants (n = 252). The average age of participants was 67.9 years (SD 9.4, range 38-94). There were no differences between cemented and uncemented cohorts on the basis of age, sex, BMI or comorbidities, revision rates or PROMS outcomes. Cemented procedures had greater skin to skin times than uncemented procedures (p < 0.01). Unadjusted outcomes comparing risk for revision across the two participant cohorts did not significantly differ. Overall rates for revision were low (cemented 3.2% v uncemented 2.7%, p=0.70).
