Introduction

Fracture and deformity after frame removal is a known risk in 9–14.5% of patients after circular frame treatment. The aims of this study were to assess the effectiveness of our staged protocol for frame removal and risk factors for the protocol failure.

Methods and materials

We identified 299 consecutive patients who underwent circular frame fixation for fracture or deformity correction in our unit from our prospective database. All 247 patients who followed the staged frame removal protocol were included in this study. We reviewed the electronic clinical record and radiographs of each patient to record demographics, risk factors for treatment failure and outcome following frame removal. We defined failure of the protocol as a re-fracture or change in bony alignment within 12 weeks of frame removal. Results underwent statistical analysis using Chi square analysis.

Aim

Our goals were to minimize the invasiveness of the revision hip arthroplasty approach in order to accelerate the patient's rehabilitation, shorten the length of hospitalization and reduce the postoperative complications, especially the rate of joint dislocation. Our study aimed to prove whether and under which conditions the less invasive approach is preferable in revision arthroplasty.

Material and Methods

The modified revision technique differs from the conventional approach in the following main aspects:

Oncologic: applying larger hip balls and inserts, after expanding the variety of the available articulating joint components in 4 mm steps (28–40 mm),

sparing and reconstructing the joint capsule, whereby the integrity of its acetabular origin is crucial.

That procedure was combined with tissue dissection strictly parallel to the direction of the muscle fibers. The transgluteal approach after Bauer was applied. The small skin incision was closed by running subcuticular technique. The inpatient postoperative phase after revision total hip arthroplasty was evaluated in the last 6.5 years. All patients completed a questionnaire.

Aims. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of hospital-level service characteristics on hip fracture outcomes and quality of care processes measures. Methods. This was a retrospective analysis of publicly available audit data obtained from the National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) 2018 benchmark summary and Facilities Survey. Data extraction was performed using a dedicated proforma to identify relevant hospital-level care process and outcome variables for inclusion. The primary outcome measure was adjusted 30-day mortality rate. A random forest-based multivariate imputation by chained equation (MICE) algorithm was used for missing value imputation. Univariable analysis for each hospital level factor was performed using a combination of Tobit regression, Siegal non-parametric linear regression, and Mann-Whitney U test analyses, dependent on the data type. In all analyses, a p-value < 0.05 denoted statistical significance. Results. Analyses included 176 hospitals, with a median of 366 hip fracture cases per year (interquartile range (IQR) 280 to 457). Aggregated data from 66,578 patients were included. The only identified hospital-level variable associated with the primary outcome of 30-day mortality was hip fracture trial involvement (no trial involvement: median 6.3%; trial involvement: median 5.7%; p = 0.039). Significant key associations were also identified between prompt surgery and presence of dedicated hip fracture sessions; reduced acute length of stay and both a higher number of hip fracture cases per year and more dedicated hip fracture operating lists; Best Practice Tariff attainment and greater number of hip fracture cases per year, more dedicated hip fracture operating lists, presence of a dedicated hip fracture ward, and hip fracture trial involvement. Conclusion. Exploratory analyses have identified that improved outcomes in hip fracture may be associated with hospital-level service characteristics, such as hip fracture research trial involvement, larger hip fracture volumes, and the use of theatre lists dedicated to hip fracture surgery. Myriad protocols exist for isolated Weber B lateral malleolus fractures with a congruent tibiotalar joint on initial radiographs. Stress and weight-bearing radiographs, all at various timepoints, may be employed to identify those injuries that develop significant talar shift but consensus is elusive. This study outlines a safe and reproducible protocol for such injuries, utilising a removable orthosis, immediate weight bearing and standard supine radiographs. A retrospective analysis of a prospective trauma database was analysed to identify patients with an isolated Weber B ankle fracture with adequate presentation radiographs demonstrating a congruent mortise. Patient records and radiographs were evaluated a minimum of 5 years after initial presentation to determine ankle stability, complications, and the burden on outpatient services. Between 2014 and 2016, 657 patients were referred to the specialist trauma clinic from the emergency department. Of the 657, 52 patients had inadequate ED radiographs to determine ankle congruity. At the two-week assessment, 11 of the 52 demonstrated talar shift and required intervention. Therefore 646 patients demonstrated ankle congruity at two weeks after weight bearing. No patient demonstrated talar shift at the six-week assessment. Average number of follow up appointments was 2.4 with 3.5 radiographs. Our new treatment protocol advocates discharge after a single orthopaedic assessment after two weeks of weight bearing. This study supports immediate weight-bearing of Weber B ankle fractures with a congruent mortise in an orthosis. Follow up beyond two weeks is unnecessary and our protocol offers a safe means of significantly reducing the outpatient burden

The aim of this study was to measure the effect of hospital case volume on the survival of revision total hip arthroplasty (RTHA). This is a retrospective analysis of Scottish Arthroplasty Project data, a nationwide audit which prospectively collects data on all arthroplasty procedures performed in Scotland. The primary outcome was RTHA survival at ten years. The primary explanatory variable was the effect of hospital case volume per year on RTHA survival. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were plotted with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to determine the lifespan of RTHA. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards were used to estimate relative revision risks over time. Hazard ratios (HRs) were reported with 95% CI, and p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. From 1999 to 2019, 13,020 patients underwent RTHA surgery in Scotland (median age at RTHA 70 years (interquartile range (IQR) 62 to 77)). In all, 5,721 (43.9%) were female, and 1065 (8.2%) were treated for infection. 714 (5.5%) underwent a second revision procedure. Co-morbidity, younger age at index revision, and positive infection status were associated with need for re-revision (p<0.001). The ten-year survival estimate for RTHA was 93.3% (95% CI 92.8 to 93.8). Adjusting for sex, age, surgeon volume, and indication for revision, high hospital case volume was not significantly associated with lower risk of re-revision (HR1, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.00, p 0.073)). The majority of RTHA in Scotland survive up to ten years. Increasing yearly hospital case volume cases is not independently associated with a significant risk reduction of re-revision

At-home softcast removal with no routine clinical follow-up has shown to be safe and effective following paediatric orthopaedic trauma. It minimises clinician contact time and reduces cost. However, there is limited data on the caregiver experience. Retrospective analysis of paediatric fractures requiring application of circumferential softcast that was later removed at home. Two time points were included: (1)July–September 2022, (2)February–April 2023. Demographics data included age, fracture classification, angulation, manipulation requirement, complications or unplanned re-attendance. Caregivers were given an information leaflet on cast removal. Caregivers completed a telephone Likert questionnaire reviewing time taken to remove cast, qualitative descriptors of cast removal and overall satisfaction. 77 families were contacted at mean 93 days post injury. Mean age was 7.5 years. 41(53%) were distal radius and 20(26%) both-bone forearm fractures. The remaining were hand, elbow or tibia injuries. 40(52%) injuries required manipulation under procedural sedation with mean sagittal angulation 24 degrees. 13(17%) patients re-attended with cast problems. Caregivers estimated a mean 13 minutes to remove cast. 83% found it ‘extremely’ or ‘somewhat’ easy. 75% were ‘extremely’ or ‘somewhat’ satisfied. 71% were ‘extremely’ or ‘somewhat’ likely to recommend at-home cast removal. Qualitative descriptors ranged from from ‘traumatising’ to ‘fun’ and ‘straightforward’. The experience at our tertiary centre confirms at-home softcast removal with no further orthopaedic follow-up is safe and feasible, even in those requiring manipulation under sedation. The majority of families reported a positive experience; this however is not universal. Adequate patient information resources are integral to a positive caregiver's experiences

To our knowledge, we are the only centre in the UK where Achilles tenotomies (TA) for CTEV Ponseti correction are performed in outpatient clinic under local anaesthetic by an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP) in orthopaedics. This study aims to present the outcomes and safety of this practice. Retrospective analysis of cases of idiopathic CTEV undergoing Ponseti correction January 2020 to October 2022. Demographic data: Pirani score and number of casts before boots and bar. Patients were divided into five groups: Group 1: TA performed by an Orthopaedic consultant under general anaesthetic (GA) in theatre. Group 2: TA performed by an Orthopaedic consultant under local anaesthetic (LA) in theatre. Group 3: TA performed by APP under GA in theatre. Group 4: TA performed by APP under LA in theatre. Group 5: TA performed by an APP under LA in outpatient clinic. Complications recorded: revision TA, infection, neurovascular injury or need for re-casting. Mean follow up 18 months. 45 feet included. Mean Pirani score 5.5, age started casting 33 days and total number of casts 6. No significant difference in demographic details between groups. 6, 4, 20, 5 and 10 tenotomies were performed in groups 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 respectively. Complications were 1 revision tenotomy from group 2, one from group 4 and 1 renewal of cast from 3. This study demonstrates that TAs performed in outpatient clinic under LA by an APP is safe and feasible. No increase in complications were observed compared to TAs performed by orthopaedic consultants


Restoration of native Coronal Plane Alignment of the Knee (CPAK) phenotype is a strategy suggested to achieve better satisfaction. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of changes in CPAK classification on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and survivorship in a large cohort of manual mechanically aligned (MA) cemented TKAs. A retrospective analysis of 1062 consecutive cemented TKAs using MA philosophy at a single institution. Pre- and post-operative hip-knee-ankle radiographs were classified using the CPAK classification. Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and patient satisfaction (4-point-Likert scale) were collected prospectively. Implant survival data was obtained from our national arthroplasty database. We compared the outcomes of patients who maintained or changed their CPAK classification following TKA. Satisfaction was analysed using chi-square test, and OKS was analysed using Mann-Whitney test. Pre-operatively, most patients were CPAK type-I (38.8%). 85.5% of patients changed their CPAK type post-operatively, with CPAK type-V observed in 41.2% of these. Significantly better satisfaction (p=0.033) and OKS (p=0.021) were observed at one-year follow-up in patients who changed CPAK type, although the difference was below OKS minimally important clinical difference. There was no difference in satisfaction (p=0.73) and OKS (p=0.26) at one year between CPAK-V and non-V classifications. Post-operative CPAK type had no correlation with satisfaction and OKS. 12 TKAs (1.1%) were revised within 10 years (3 septic). In this large cohort of MA-TKA, excellent survivorship was observed at 10 years, with no demonstrable difference in outcome related to the final CPAK phenotype or change in phenotype

This study aimed to assess the outcomes of patients with complex rib fractures undergoing operative or non-operative management at our center over a six-year time period. Retrospective analysis was performed to identify all patients with complex rib fractures at our center from May 2016 to September 2022. Outcome measures included mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy, pneumonia, and mortality at one year. 388 patients with complex rib fractures were identified. 37 (10%) patients fulfilled criteria for surgical management and underwent rib fracture fixation; 351 patients were managed non-operatively with anaesthetic block or analgesia alone. The fixation group had a significantly higher proportion of patients with flail chest (30 (81%) vs 94 (27%), p<0.001) and were significantly more likely to require ICU admission (30 (81%) vs. 16 (5%), p<0.001) than the non-operative group. At one year follow-up, no significant differences were seen for mortality between these groups (1 (3%) vs. 27 (7%), p=0.276). Of the surgical management group, those that underwent fixation <72 hours post injury were significantly less likely to develop pneumonia than those who were delayed >72 hours (2 (18%) vs 15 (58%), p=0.038), with downward trends noted for ICU length of stay (6 vs 10 days, p=0.140) and duration of mechanical ventilation (5 vs 8 days, p=0.177); no significant differences were seen for tracheostomy (3 vs. 5, p=0.588) or mortality (0 vs 1, p=0.856). Surgical fixation of complex rib fractures improves outcomes in selected patient groups. Early surgical fixation led to reduced rates of pneumonia and may improve other outcome measures

Acetabular fractures present a challenge. Anatomical reduction can be achieved by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). However, in elderly patients with complex fracture patterns and osteoporotic bone stock, “fix and replace” has become an option in the management of these injuries. This involves ORIF of the acetabulum to enable insertion of a press fit cup and subsequent cemented femoral stem at the index surgery. A Retrospective analysis of all operatively managed acetabular fractures by a regional Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma service (01/01/2018-30/05/2023) STATA used for analysis. 34 patients undergoing “fix and replace” surgery. Of the 133 patients managed with ORIF, 21 subsequently required Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). Mean follow up was 2.7 years versus 5.1. There was no statistical significance between the two groups with regards to BMI or sex. Mean age in the “fix and replace” group was 68 compared to 48 in the ORIF and subsequent THA group. This reached statistical significance between the two groups (p=0.001).ASA and Charlson Comorbidity Index (3 and 3 in “fix and replace” and 2 and 1.2 in ORIF to THA group) and Charlson Comorbidity Index both were statistically significantly different (p=0.006 and p=0.027, respectively). High energy mechanism of injury accounted for 56% of the “fix and replace” group compared to 48% in the ORIF to THA. 74% of “fix and replace” were associated fractures compared to 53% of ORIF to THA. Wait to surgery was 3 days for “fix and replace” while 186 days was the mean wait time from listing to THA for the ORIF to THA group. Complication rate was 41% versus 43% in the two groups. 14% in the ORIF to THA group developed PJI versus 6% in “fix and replace”. Fix and replace allows early mobilisation in frailer, elderly patients. Our results show fewer returns to theatre and less PJI in patients having arthroplasty as part of “fix and replace” than subsequent to Open reduction internal fixation

Aims. The aim of this study was to assess the safety and clinical outcome of patients with a femoral shaft fracture and a previous complex post-traumatic femoral malunion who were treated with a clamshell osteotomy and fixation with an intramedullary nail (IMN). Methods. The study involved a retrospective analysis of 23 patients. All had a previous, operatively managed, femoral shaft fracture with malunion due to hardware failure. They were treated with a clamshell osteotomy between May 2015 and March 2020. The mean age was 42.6 years (26 to 62) and 15 (65.2%) were male. The mean follow-up was 2.3 years (1 to 5). Details from their medical records were analyzed. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the quality of correction of the deformity, functional recovery, the healing time of the fracture, and complications. Results. The mean length of time between the initial injury and surgery was 4.5 years (3 to 10). The mean operating time was 2.8 hours (2.05 to 4.4)), and the mean blood loss was 850 ml (650 to 1,020). Complications occurred in five patients (21.7%): two with wound necrosis, and three with deep vein thrombosis. The mean coronal deformity was significantly corrected from 17.78° (SD 4.62°) preoperatively to 1.35° (SD 1.72°) postoperatively (p < 0.001), and the mean sagittal deformity was significantly corrected from 20.65° (SD 5.88°) preoperatively to 1.61° (SD 1.95°; p < 0.001) postoperatively. The mean leg length discrepancy was significantly corrected from 3.57 cm (SD 1.27) preoperatively to 1.13 cm (SD 0.76) postoperatively (p < 0.001). All fractures healed at a mean of seven months (4 to 12) postoperatively. The mean Lower Extremity Functional Scale score improved significantly from 45.4 (SD 9.1) preoperatively to 66.2 (SD 5.5) postoperatively (p < 0.001). Partial cortical nonunion in the deformed segment occurred in eight patients (34.8%) and healed at a mean of 2.4 years (2 to 3) postoperatively. Conclusion. A clamshell osteotomy combined with IMN fixation in the treatment of patients with a femoral shaft fracture and a previous post-traumatic femoral malunion achieved excellent outcomes. Aims

The aim of the present study was to assess the outcomes of the induced membrane technique (IMT) for the management of infected segmental bone defects, and to analyze predictive factors associated with unfavourable outcomes.

Methods

Between May 2012 and December 2020, 203 patients with infected segmental bone defects treated with the IMT were enrolled. The digital medical records of these patients were retrospectively analyzed. Factors associated with unfavourable outcomes were identified through logistic regression analysis.

Aims

The aims of this study were to assess quality of life after hip fractures, to characterize respondents to patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and to describe the recovery trajectory of hip fracture patients.

Methods

Data on 35,206 hip fractures (2014 to 2018; 67.2% female) in the Norwegian Hip Fracture Register were linked to data from the Norwegian Patient Registry and Statistics Norway. PROMs data were collected using the EuroQol five-dimension three-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-3L) scoring instrument and living patients were invited to respond at four, 12, and 36 months post fracture. Multiple imputation procedures were performed as a model to substitute missing PROM data. Differences in response rates between categories of covariates were analyzed using chi-squared test statistics. The association between patient and socioeconomic characteristics and the reported EQ-5D-3L scores was analyzed using linear regression.

Aims

Though most humeral shaft fractures heal nonoperatively, up to one-third may lead to nonunion with inferior outcomes. The Radiographic Union Score for HUmeral Fractures (RUSHU) was created to identify high-risk patients for nonunion. Our study evaluated the RUSHU’s prognostic performance at six and 12 weeks in discriminating nonunion within a significantly larger cohort than before.

Methods

Our study included 226 nonoperatively treated humeral shaft fractures. We evaluated the interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility of RUSHU scoring using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Additionally, we determined the optimal cut-off thresholds for predicting nonunion using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) method.

Aims

The aim of this study was to examine perioperative blood transfusion practice, and associations with clinical outcomes, in a national cohort of hip fracture patients.

Methods

A retrospective cohort study was undertaken using linked data from the Scottish Hip Fracture Audit and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service between May 2016 and December 2020. All patients aged ≥ 50 years admitted to a Scottish hospital with a hip fracture were included. Assessment of the factors independently associated with red blood cell transfusion (RBCT) during admission was performed, alongside determination of the association between RBCT and hip fracture outcomes.

Introduction. Managing open tibial fractures according to national guidelines is a primary focus for major trauma centres, however pressures of capacity and expertise limit the capability to achieve all of these standards for every patient. Debate remains over the impact of particular aspects of guidance, especially in relation to the timing of surgical interventions. Evaluation of these tenants of care predominantly hinge on trends derived from low level scientific evidence, mainly due to the difficulty in completing high level studies. The aim of this study is to assess the complication rates and the associations with difficulties in achieving the national guidance standards. Methods. Retrospective analysis of the 2015/2016 cohort of 3B open tibial fractures treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Data collected, through the use of the patient electronic records, cross referenced against hospital coding and trauma injury database, included patient demographics, injury details, clinical interventions, surgical management, complications and time to bony union. Results. During the studied period, 40 patients were identified with 3B open tibial fractures. 2 patients died during the period of management, 3 patients were lost to follow up. Median time to definitive soft tissue coverage was achieved at 5 days post injury, definitive fixation at 6 days post injury. 25% of the cohort breached the 7 day maximum recommended limit. Overall complication rate was greater than 50%, with deep infection rate of 11% and non-union rate of 9%. Median time to union was 9 months. Conclusions. Missed opportunities to provide optimal patient care for severe lower limb open fractures are contributing to the high complication rates for these injuries. In order to aim for improvements in clinical outcomes, considered multispecialty clinical decision making needs to be coupled with institutional support and resources to adequately provide care for this injury cohort

Purpose. Surgical correction of upper limb deformities in severe osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is technically difficult and less absolving, hence we aimed to analyse the surgical complications of rodding the humeri in severe OI. Methods and results. Retrospective analysis was carried out for consecutive humeral roddings for severe OI in last 3 years. Surgical technique for all humeri included retrograde telescopic nailing (female or both of FD or TST rods) with entry from olecranon fossa, exploration of radial nerve followed by osteotomies. Deformities were quantified and sub-classified as per level of deformity). Variables such as number of osteotomies, radiological union, intraoperative and postoperative complications, improvement in ROM and subjective patient satisfaction were recorded. Total 18 humeri in 12 patients with type III OI (except 1) with mean age of 8.9 years underwent nailing. All patients achieved radiological union at 6–10 weeks. Total 8 complications (44.4 %) were reported within mean 8.4 months follow up. Four segments (22.2 %) had intraoperative fractures at distal third of the humerus while negotiating the nail. Significantly higher intraoperative complications were encountered in humeri fixed with both components combined and upper third level deformities, deformities > 900 and more than 2 osteotomies. Other complications were prominent implant at upper end (2) with growth and one each of contralateral fracture and distal humeral varus. All patients reported improvement in ROM and functional status. Conclusion. Significant complications are associated with humeral nailing for severe OI. Quantification of the deformity with meticulous surgical planning and execution is advised. Despite these complications outcomes show benefits of the surgical treatment. Level of evidence. The aims of this study were to assess the pre- and postoperative incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) using routine duplex Doppler ultrasound (DUS), to assess the incidence of pulmonary embolism (PE) using CT angiography, and to identify the factors that predict postoperative DVT in patients with a pelvic and/or acetabular fracture.

Methods

All patients treated surgically for a pelvic and/or acetabular fracture between October 2016 and January 2020 were enrolled into this prospective single-centre study. The demographic, medical, and surgical details of the patients were recorded. DVT screening of the lower limbs was routinely performed using DUS before and at six to ten days after surgery. CT angiography was used in patients who were suspected of having PE. Age-adjusted univariate and stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis were used to determine the association between explanatory variables and postoperative DVT.

Background. Temporary hemiepiphysiodesis using 8 plate guided growth has gained widespread acceptance for the treatment of paediatric angular deformities. This study aims to look at outcomes of coronal lower limb deformities corrected using temporary hemiepiphysiodesis over an extended period of follow up. Methods. A retrospective analysis was undertaken of 56 children (92 legs) with coronal plane deformities around the knee which were treated with an extraperiosteal 2 holed titanium plate and screws between 2007 and 2015. Pre and post-op long leg radiographs and clinic letters were reviewed. Results. The mean age was 11.9 years (range 3 to 16) with a mean angular deformity of 12.3 degrees (5.1 to 33.5). The mean rate of correction was 0.8 degrees per month. Isolated distal femur correction occurred at a mean rate of 0.6 degrees per month (0.2 to 1.4) and isolated tibia at a rate of 0.5 degrees per month (0.0 to 1.7). Children treated with concurrent treatment of both femur and tibia corrected at a rate of 1.4 degrees per month (0.1 to 2.7). Similar rates of correction occur in children aged 10 and over compared to those younger than 10 (0.8 degrees per month compared to 0.7). We also saw similar rates of correction with extended follow up. The average rate of correction over the first 9 months post op was 0.8 degrees compared to 0.6 degrees over the following 10 months. Conclusion. This study is the largest long term follow up of 8 plate hemiepiphysiodesis which highlights the rate of correction in all age groups. Implications. With this knowledge surgeons can make a more informed decision regarding placement of hemiepiphysiodesis plates and length of time required for correction of angular deformities. It may also lead to consideration of alternative, more powerful techniques if the rate of correction is insufficient. Conflict of Interest: None declared

We analysed the functional and psychological outcomes in children and adolescents with complex tibial fractures treated with the Ilizarov method at our frame unit. An observational study with prospective data collection and retrospective analysis of clinical data was undertaken. Patients younger than 18 years and an open physis were included. The Ilizarov method (combined with percutaneous screw fixation in physeal injuries) was applied and immediate weightbearing recommended. Sixty four patients (50 male, 14 female) aged between 4 and 17 years were admitted to our Major Trauma Centre from 2013 until 2016 (25 tertiary referrals). Thirty one (48%) patients were involved in road traffic accidents, 12 (19%) sustained injuries in full contact sports. The average weight was 51 kg (range 16–105 kg). Twenty three open tibial fractures (14 Gustilo 3A and 9 Gustilo 3B) and 15 associated physeal injuries were treated among a cohort of closed tibial fractures with significant displacement (10 failed conservative treatment prior to frame treatment). We report a 100% union rate with a median hospital stay of 4 days (range 2–19) and a median frame time of 105 days (range 62–205 days). Malunions (> 5 degrees in any plane) were not observed. Three patients required bone transport. At the time of submission, 70% of patients and their parents reported functional outcomes using the Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) at minimum six months post frame. The PedsQLTM 4.0 Generic Core Scales are comprised of parallel child self-report and parent proxy-report formats. Children's physical average scores were 79 out of 100 and average psychosocial scores were 80 out of 100 and for parent average physical scores were 78 out of 100 and the same for parent average psychosocial scores. These results suggest high levels of quality of life on the PedsQL. The median visual analogue health score (0–100) was 81 out of 100 (71–100), median Lysholm knee scores 98 (range 49–100) and median Olerud & Molander ankle scores 75 (range 40 – 100). Regardless of age, weight and soft tissue damage and complexity of fracture pattern, the Ilizarov method has shown to be safe and effective treating tibial fractures in the paediatric and adolescent population admitted to our Major Trauma Centre. Furthermore, patients reported high physical and psychosocial functioning following treatment. Level of evidence: IV (case series)
