Purpose of the study

We reviewed one hundred and twenty patients who had primary total hip replacement using Corail/Pinnacle Metal on metal bearing surfaces between 2006 and 2009.

We were interested in the metal ion levels of the whole cohort, the incidence of unexplained pain, pseudo tumour lesions (ALVAL) and early loosening and failure. We were particularly interested in the relationship of the acetabular cup position in relation to the pelvis and lumbar spine.

Material and methods

We reviewed 120 charts and 104 patients in total.

All patients had metal ion assays (cobalt and chromium)

All patients had standardised radiographic evaluation using a special technique to assess acetabular cup position and the relationship to the pelvis and lumbar spine.

Introduction

Total Ankle replacement designs continue to evolve, and provide an alternative to ankle arthrodesis for patients with ankle arthritis. It has been our practice to offer total ankle replacement to selected patients with ankle arthritis. The purpose of this study was to analyse the short term results of our patients with the Mobility R Total Ankle Replacement (TAR) system.

Methods

All patients who received TAR in our practice from 2004 to 2011 were reviewed. American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Scores AOFAS were assessed and compared both preoperatively and at time of follow-up. All complications both intra-operative and post-operatively were noted. Weight bearing X-rays were taken at follow-up, and implant alignment and the presence of lucencies were noted.
