We report our experience with carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) plates in the management of 19 problem fractures complicated by either infection, nonunion, comminution or contamination. The combination offers secure fixation without inhibition of callus formation.

The localisation of acute haematogenous pyogenic osteomyelitis following a local injury is well known. Whilst there is often a history of trauma in patients developing bone and joint tuberculosis, its role is obscure. Two patients are reported who developed histologically proven tuberculosis in the vicinity of closed fractures during the healing process. These two patients make a total of four so far reported.

1. This clinical investigation compares the results with varying periods of immobilisation after the primary repair of extensor tendons over the metacarpo-phalangeal joints of the fingers.

2. One hundred and thirty-seven Bantu mine workers with such injuries were each splinted for either one day, ten days or three weeks, and the results were compared.

3. The results indicate that the optimum period of splintage is ten days.
