Impact Factor (2023): 2.8

Bone & Joint Open (BJO) is owned and published by The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery, a registered charity (No. 209299). The Society was established with the object of: 'The advancement and improvement of education in orthopaedic surgery and allied branches of surgery and the diffusion of knowledge of new and improved methods of teaching and practising orthopaedic surgery in all its branches'.

As part of our charitable remit, The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery supports several orthopaedic fellowships with financial donations. These include the ABC fellowship, the Mark Paterson Travelling Fellowship (an initiative with EFORT), and the British Orthopaedic Research Society/Bone & Joint Research Fellowship.

Launched in January 2020, BJO allows us to publish more clinically relevant papers across all orthopaedic and trauma specialties via open access and a continuous publication model. It is Plan S compliant.

All papers if deemed suitable for peer review, will undergo a rigourous double-blind peer review process. Once accepted, papers will be produced to high standards by the same experienced in-house team as for The Bone & Joint Journal and Bone & Joint Research. An accelerated editorial process will allow for rapid online publication, and by using open access all articles will be freely available online, giving your work the widest possible audience.

Aims and Scope

Bone & Joint Open is a gold open access journal publishing high-quality clinically relevant papers across all orthopaedic and trauma specialties. The journal aims to provide rapid publication of research across a range of disciplines, through a continuous publication model, and is fully Plan S compliant. The journal is aimed at all clinicians, researchers and care teams within the Orthopaedic & Trauma specialty.

Information on BJO's Open Access policy and author publication charges can be found here. BJO will consider papers that provide clinically relevant orthopaedic information. BJO will not consider case reports, concurrent submission with multiple journals, or redundant material, and all authors must confirm that their paper is original, not under consideration elsewhere and that all have contributed to the paper.

Authorship Criteria

  • There is a limit of eight (8) authors.
  • Each author must have contributed significantly to, and take public responsibility for, one or more of the following study aspects:
    • Design
    • Data acquisition
    • Analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Individuals who have contributed to only one section of the manuscript or have contributed only cases should be treated as a non-author and be credited in the “Acknowledgements” section instead.
  • More information on authorship and non-author contributors can be found on the ICMJE author definitions
  • All authors must have been actively involved in the writing and revising of the manuscript, and each must provide final approval of the version to be published. If a research group is listed as the author of an article, please visit our Research Group Authorship Policy
  • Each author must declare their roles on the ‘Title Page’ of the paper in accordance with the CRediT Taxonomy initiative
  • Any change to authorship after peer review needs to be formally requested with a letter to the Editor-in-Chief. Please state the change required and ensure all authors have signed the letter.

We ask that authors add an ORCID ID to their user account, if available, before making a submission. For authors who do not have an ORCID ID, we encourage you to register using the following link: https://orcid.org/register. If you are unable to access the ORCID website, please let us know.
